Franz Ferdinand Among Shortlist
Finalists
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Shortlist is finally short. After an initial 73
nominations for the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize, the 10 finalists have been
announced. Among them are Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand, quirky chanteuse
Nellie McKay and country veteran Loretta Lynn, whose comeback album was produced
by the White Stripes' Jack White.
The Shortlist Prize honors artists whose albums were critically acclaimed but
fell short of mainstream commercial success. It is decided by an eclectic mix of
musicians and journalists. This year's committee includes Norah Jones, Jack
Black, John Mayer and the Dixie Chicks.
The other seven finalists are the albums of Wilco, The Killers, TV on the
Radio, Air, The Streets, Dizzee Rascal and Ghostface Killah.
Previous winners are singer-songwriter Damien Rice, the dreamy Icelandic
group Sigur Ros and N.E.R.D, the recording alter-ego of producers The Neptunes.
Dangerfield in Coma After Heart
Surgery
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Rodney Dangerfield has been in a coma for a couple of
weeks after undergoing heart surgery, but has begun to show some awareness, his
wife said Monday.
The 82-year-old comedian was stable and had been breathing on his own for 24
hours, Joan Dangerfield said in a statement released by the comic's publicist,
Kevin Sasaki.
Dangerfield had a heart valve replaced Aug. 25 at the University of
California, Los Angeles, Medical Center.
There was no mention of a coma in a condition update from the publicist last
week. Sasaki did not return calls for comment Monday.
Trump Trounces'Benefactor' in TV
Ratings
NEW YORK (AP) -- In the battle of rich guys turned TV stars, Donald Trump has
it all over Mark Cuban. Trump drew just under 16 million viewers to NBC last
week for the second installment of "The Apprentice 2," according to
Nielsen Media Research.
While the series is starting slowly this time around, it's not nearly as slow
as Cuban's "The Benefactor." The colorful Dallas Mavericks owner is
giving away money on a new ABC reality show, and its debut reached 5.5 million
people, Nielsen said. A rerun the following night had fewer than 3 million
viewers.
During the week before the official opening of the fall season, the most
popular program was - appropriately enough - a rerun. "CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation" had 22.3 million viewers.
Two of television's signature events - the Emmy Awards and the Miss America
pageant - both fell out of Nielsen's top 10. The Emmys were seen by only 13.8
million people on ABC Sunday, the second smallest audience ever for TV's award
night. Miss America was seen by 9.8 million people, its smallest audience ever.
